The Story

Growing up in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Mark always planned to become a missionary. After 9 years in the Australian Army, Mark re-trained as a Baptist Minister, serving in two churches in country Victoria and as a Reserve Army Chaplain before re-joining the Army as a fulltime Chaplain. For Jodie, it was a different journey, she met Mark while they were studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy and had never considered being a missionary, so it has been an amazing journey over the last twenty years.

God has used many challenges and experiences to prepare the Simmonds’ Family for this next step – including postings to Canberra, Darwin, Townsville and Victoria; mission trips to Central Australia, PNG and Russia; personal times of challenge and deployments for Mark to Indonesian, Afghanistan and Bougainville.

With this preparation the whole family are so excited to be serving God with MAF in South Sudan. The children, Jessica (24 Mar 2002), Hannah-Rose (23 Aug 2005) and Joel (16 Jul 2008) are particularly keen to try lots of different food, meet new friends and be home schooled.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.

Luke 4:18
