The Story

Growing up in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Mark always planned to become a missionary. After 9 years in the Australian Army, Mark re-trained as a Baptist Minister, serving in two churches in country Victoria and as a Reserve Army Chaplain before re-joining the Army as a fulltime Chaplain. For Jodie, it was a different journey, she met Mark while they were studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy and had never considered being a missionary, so it has been an amazing journey over the last twenty years.

God has used many challenges and experiences to prepare the Simmonds’ Family for this next step – including postings to Canberra, Darwin, Townsville and Victoria; mission trips to Central Australia, PNG and Russia; personal times of challenge and deployments for Mark to Indonesia, Afghanistan and Bougainville.

The family are pleased to be serving God with MAF in Kenya.  Mark is the Quality Manager based in Kenya for MAF operations in Kenya and South Sudan. He is responsible to ensure compliance with the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority regulations, in short, keeping MAF planes, pilots and partners safely in the air. Jodie is the Education Support and Child Safety Officer for the Africa Region, providing advice and support to families in the areas of education, child safety and during times of transition, enabling families to stay on the field, reaching people with the love of Jesus.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.

Luke 4:18
